I make the argument that many of our 17th-century colonial Payne families descended from a common ancestor who had lived into the 15th-century. This common ancestor has a name: John Payn. John died in 1402 and is described as "of Wymondham, Norfolk." He was a fairly prominent man in the court of Henry IV, serving as Chief Butler of England and as Constable of Norwich Castle- although there is no indication as to how he achieved this status.

Note: There has been a long - standing tradition concerning the two unknown sons above. There are at least one dozen versions of this tradition. They are that one of these sons was the Immigrant John Payne #574. They differ in the name of John's brother variously given as William, Thomas and/or Robert However, Patric Payne has discovered that John Payne could not have been a son of Sir Robert Payne because he has found the names of all of Robert's children. Patrick is confident that John Payne is still a member of the Huntingdonshire familyl, most likely the Southoe branch.
John Payne #574 of the ship [John and Dorthy] was a known partner of the brothers Joseph and Nathaniel Hawes of London. Their brother-in-law was Capt. George Payne [who married Rachel Hawes #1025]. Sir Robert Payne #655 DID have a son by the name of George #1017 [the only George Patrick Payne has managed to find in ANY Payne family during that period]. George was also a partner of the Hawes brothers and he ended up bailing John Payne out of his troubles with them over the 1635 voyage by buying the ship so John could pay the crews wages. There is a 1662/3 will of a George Payne, Gentleman of London, that mentions his cousins, Robert and John Payne of St. Neots, Huntingdonshire. Researcher and author, Patrick Payne believes this to be the same George.
While this may not be definitive proof that John Payne was a member of the Huntingdonshire family (being a cousin of Sir Robert Paynes son George), Patrick believes it is the best evidence we currently have. Source: Patrick Payne.
