It could be said that we owe our existence to the convergence of certain families into what was referred
to then as the
'Midland Section' or 'Midland District'.
This is a region surrounding the unincorporated community of Midland in Klamath County, OR, about nine miles
south of Klamath Falls, OR. Campbell and Reams platted the town site in about 1908, naming it
'Midland' probably because the land was partly surrounded by marshes. It was located on the
Cascade line of the Southern Pacific Railroad.
In 1907 Ward Dolan moved to the Midland district from Harrisonville, MO by stage coach just before the railroad reached Midland. In the Midland region he operated the Thomas Martin Spring Lake Ranch until 1918.
In March, 1909 Midland, OR was reached by railroad construction. Crews worked on the roadbed and cuts at Texum (Roundhouse Hill). The first work train reached Klamath Falls on May 3rd. On May 20th, the first passengers road the train in Klamath Falls.
In 1910 Bert Hickman, his wife, Coral Payne Hickman and son, Lyle Hickman (b. 1909) moved to the Midland region from Clifton, CO., just outside of Grand Junction, CO. He leased a ranch in the Midland region known as "the Colonel Allison place", eight miles south of Klamath Falls, OR and four miles east of Midland. Bert died of an undetermind illness at the Allison Ranch in the same year.
In 1913 Coral Payne Married
Ward Dolan. Then, in 1918 he purchased an adjoining ranch to the Thomas Martin Spring Lake Rance which he operated as a sheep ranch for 35 years.
James B. Burnett married Veda Pearl Rowe, 08-Aug-1911 in Hagerstown, MD. At that time he was from Martinsburg, WV and she was from Shepherdstown WV. They then moved to the Midland area with their daughter, Anna Lucile in 1920. He operated a 160 acre ranch. That ranch's address was then Rt. 1, Box 897, Klamath Falls, OR.< /p>
In 1931 Lyle Hickman and Anna Burnett were married at the Dolan ranch. That is the story of how all of these people came to be together to shape our destiny.
